Okay, definitely not what I'd planned on for today. I was, in fact, planning on chilling out at Elizabeth's house and petting the cats, and then heading home, visiting the library, and typing my little brains out to get the stories I need to finish done.
Well, the first part actually did happen as planned. And for all I know, once the reaction has worked itself through, the latter part may well yet occur.
It was sort of the part in between that I didn't really expect. See, Thomas came to pick me up from Elizabeth's house, and about a block down the road we saw a man, in the middle of the street, having a seizure. No one else out and about, no one else has seen him yet, as far as we can tell. And we couldn't exactly just drive past and leave him there. It wasn't safe for him or whoever else would drive down the road after we did.
So Thomas stayed with him, since I think he'd had first aid training the most recently, and I ran back to my sister's house as fast as possible to call an ambulance. I managed to get all the information I had at the time across to the person at dispatch, and they sent an ambulance (and a fire truck, and at least two police cars that we saw) on down.
By the time I got back to Thomas, an RN had also seen what had happened and was assisting, and the man was conscious, if not exactly coherent. And about the time the ambulance and fire truck arrived, we felt that we more than a little superfluous and headed out.
And of course, the moment I stopped having things I needed to do to take care of the situation, I had my reaction. I'm still a bit shaky and stressed, and it's been about a half an hour since we first saw the guy.
And this, people, is why I'm going for physical therapy, not an ER doctor. I don't like the stress reactions I have after the emergency is over, even if I cope fine while the situation is occurring.
