On Evolution and Intelligent design
Aug. 9th, 2005 07:19 pmI'll warn you, this is going to get a little bit rude. Fundamentalist Christians, and opponents of evolution, run away screaming.
I was reading the Time article on the recent controversy about teaching intelligent design. Aside from the fact that I had to put down the magazine about twenty times to rant about generalized stupidity, I have come to only one conclusion. The real reason many Christians have problems with evolution is that their God is too small.
What do I mean by that? They don't want a God of the universe, immense and unknowable, they want a God they can control. They want to be able to point to a literal explanation of the Bible, and say that you don't need to think about what it can mean, because it's easier to take each word as the literal truth. And asking them to consider that there might be more to the universe than their preconceived notions is scary, because it means that you either throw God away, or you believe that God is bigger than your understanding.
Any comments?
