Okay, so it's a lot later than when I planned on updating about this. Sorry.

I went to the Ohio Renaissance Festival this weekend with my family. It turned into a whole family affair, as my Aunt and Uncle showed up as well. Elizabeth, Mom, Aunt Cindy, and I all went in garb, but the guys declined. Except for Thomas, who took along his sword.

We had a lot of fun wandering around the shops there. One of the first shops we went to was a clothing shop, and it had this gorgeous green plaid cloak hanging up. I tried it on, and you could see the wheels in my aunt and uncle's minds turning. I'll admit, I was in love with the cloak myself almost from first glance. It was gorgeous. Frankly, I was wondering if I could afford to buy it myself when Uncle Scott started talking with the salesperson about how much it was. We didn't want to make a major purchase early on, but it was gorgeous. Finally we decided to leave it there, and if we didn't see anything else we liked as much by the time we left, we'd swing back and consider getting that cloak.

We wandered around the other shops, sometimes stopping to talk to the owners, sometimes just oohing and awwing over the merchandise, which tended to be beautiful. Elizabeth and I got asked to pose for a picture by a random guy wearing garb. I'm not sure if he was doing that for publicity or just because he thought we looked pretty and he wanted a picture for himself.

Elizabeth and I were actually quite popular. We're both red-heads, both reasonably attractive, and we had several guys flirting with us madly. It seems that guys can't help themselves when confronted by red-heads in bodices. It was fun, and mildly amusing to watch guys flirt madly with Elizabeth in particular.

Aunt Cindy, being the natural shopper that she is, dragged us somewhat willingly into all the clothing shops. There was one that was designed for the seriously upscale garb, with French Medieval dresses in gorgeous velvets. I know I was drooling, although I could never afford to spend that much on garb.

There was also entertainment in the form of music and theater. Uncle Scott stopped at every busker for at least three songs. And we watched a rendition of Beowulf's defeat of Grendel in the mud theater. There was a point in which Beowulf forgot to come out on his que, and one of the actors started asking a little boy in the audience who had a light saber and had been approaching the actors repeatedly to come and help. By the time the kid came forward, Beowulf reappeared, and the kid went back to his parents. I think his mom was relieved, she wouldn't have to deal with that kind of mud on the kid's clothes.

Thomas ended up getting garb himself. He had said that he wanted to get a shirt for garb this year. By the time we got him in the black poet's shirt, may I say wow. He's going to knock the girls dead when they start noticing him. He also impressed the shopgirl by getting out of his t-shirt while wearing the garb shirt. The skills you pick up from your sisters!

Mom and I took Sara up on one of the rides there. It was a ship swing, and we could control how high it swung and how fast by how hard we pulled on the ropes attached to the top pulley. Sara had a wonderful time on it, and Mom liked the ride as well, I think because she was in some amount of control over it.

We visited a lot of shops, but one of the most fun ones was a corset shop. We had just started looking around, and were admiring one of the bodices that was printed like a map, with various different amusing captions (treasure chest on the breasts, for example), when the store owner caught sight of Elizabeth. He had her stripped out of her own bodice and into one of his in ten minutes flat, keeping up a running commentary the entire time. It was a gorgeous bodice, and she looked great in it. And considering how well made it was, she could probably have worn it for years. But it cost almost three hundred bucks! When she said she didn't have the money for it, his response was "you stabbed me in the heart. Then you jiggled the knife around a bit, jerked it up and to the left, and twisted it. Then you took it out, and stabbed me in the back." I was sitting back and giggling the entire time. We didn't end up buying anything from him, but he did give us chocolate, so on the whole I think we came out ahead.

I said that Uncle Scott liked to stop by all of the buskers. The last one we listened to, we actually stopped and sang along with them. They liked it, and we had fun singing Scarborough Faire and Greensleeves.

At the very end we went back to the first store and got my cloak. It is beautiful and swishy and I am exceedingly happy about it.

And that was my Saturday. Fun, huh?

It will happen someday. If we have to move heaven and earth, it will happen. And then we will start giggling insanely.

The bodice shop was so much fun. I think you would have really enjoyed it, and I'd have loved to see you in one.

Cool! All of it sounds just amazing. The only Renaissance Faire I've ever been to was a school affair -- fun, but not much of an operating budget. This sounds awesome.

Ooh, swishy cloaks are fun...

Do go to one of the main ones. There tends to be at least one per state.

Swishy cloaks are happy-making.
