Listening to the news this morning, I am resisting the urge to start randomly choking Fundamentalist christians who think that we should be forcing through a bigoted Constitutional amendment to legally discriminate against homosexuals. Grr. And they know that it won't pass, and just want to do it to divide liberals and consolidate a conservative base for the next election. Politics at its worst.

And for the last time, would someone please give me a coherant reason why a marriage between two consenting adults who love each other is in any way a threat to me and my potential future marriage? Really, eight verses in the Bible, all of which are reacting to very explotative attitudes and practices, not what we concieve of as homosexual behavior today, and people get this violent and hateful? There are hundreds and thousands of verses about taking care of the poor, and a lot about not hating people, why can't we focus on that instead? Please?

In better news, I got my journal back from my philosophy teacher today. Let's just say that with the grade I got on that, I'm pretty much guaranteed an A in that class. Lots of nice comments and smilies in the margins as well. *grins* I really love this class, and I guess it showed.

[livejournal.com profile] elvisvf101, I've started work on that Susan fic you requested. I've got a paper that I need to work on tomorrow, but I should be able to finish it by Wednesday.

Oh, man, so many ways to agree with you on that first part! The verse that always pops into my head when I read stories about the proposed amendment is "whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die". And I just keep thinking, doesn't that mean that you actually have to believe in what Jesus taught, in all of what He taught, and be a daily example of His compassion and love in order to be saved or redeemed or whatever? How can anyone call himself a believer in Christ who so blatantly hates someone?

The other thing that always pops in my head is how many supporters of this amendment would decry it if you changed "homosexual" to "biracial"? I mean, honestly.

I feel a greater desire to choke the democrats and republicans who are being played like a fiddle to do the fundies' bidding just so they could get their votes.

Meanwhile, marriage isn't as sacred as it used to be. Now people get married until they realise it isn't going to work out. If people want to get married cos they love each other and want to raise a happy, healthy family, you'd think these jerk-offs would be all over it! (And just watch, when gay people do get the rights they've been denied, the whackos are going to act like they supported it the whole time.)

Take your time...I'm patient....

Except when it comes to fundamentalists. I have plenty of complicated religious views on homosexuality, but my views on BS politics are pretty simple.

STOP WASTING YOUR TAXPAYER FUNDED SALARY ON POSTURING AND DO YOUR FRIGGIN' JOB!!!

Honestly, if you stop and think for two seconds, you'll realize that this ammendment is horribly unconstitutional. And honestly, we're asking for legal status for homosexuals, not consecration. After all, the government can't give that, small matter of seperation of church and state. Marriage as a legal entity is mainly about taxes. So what we really have is Fundamentalists trying to tax people for being gay. After all, they can't tax people for being non-white and non-males anymore.

Seriously folks, the right wants people to pay more taxes. Anyone care to explain that to me?

And also, since I'm from the left, I'd like to say to our leaders:

STOP SHOWING OFF YOUR FLEXIBILITY AND GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF PLACES THEY SHOULDN'T BE!!!

If I hear one more person say that this is about love, I'm gonna puke. It's not that I don't believe it is, I don't like denying loving couples equal protection under the law. But seriously, we're losing the PR fight. It's time to hit the undecideds where it hurts: The Wallet. Make this about what matters to everyone. Remind them that if they are denied equal protection UNDER THE LAW for religious reasons, everyone had better start looking over their shoulder.

...back to being patient...

Good job on your philosophy journal.

As for the threat to your potential marriage, don't you see? All the nice guys are, in fact, gay, thus banning gay marriage allows for women to find the proverbial "nice guy", so really the uber conservatives are trying to do you a *favor*!

All sarcasm aside, Sexuality is still one of the stronger taboos in our culture, and to have a group of people, who look and act almost identical to other people aside from a differing sexual preference is disturbing to some people. Cultures react quite strongly to people who seemingly violate a cultural taboo. This doesn’t forgive or exonerate their actions, but it may shed some light as to why certain groups insist on taking this fight to such extremes, it isn’t a matter of allowing people to be happy for them, it’s a matter of protecting their world view from an assault by outside forces. And unfortunately the Bible is being used as a tool to promote their specific world view.

I really think anyone who uses the excuse, "the Bible says it's wrong," is kidding themselves. The Bible says plenty of things that people ignore. The Bible says slavery is okay. The Bible says sex outside of marriage is not okay. The Bible says divorce is not okay. The Bible says love thy neighbor.

How many people follow those things? Not many. People have a selective view of the Bible, and people take it literally when they shouldn't. I was raised Roman Catholic, and I know that I learned a lot of really good things at church. I think it's sad that so many people use their religion asa reason to hate.

And they know that it won't pass, and just want to do it to divide liberals and consolidate a conservative base for the next election.

This is what I love/hate most about this marriage amendment thing - we're being told (fundamentalists), none too subtly, that the amendment has little chance of passing and they are just motivating the conservative base. We're telling you that we're manipulating you, and it's working! Political posturing is something I will never really understand and probably something I will never really condone.

Unfortunately far too many people use their religions to justify hatred. I'm just glad it didn't pass.

Yes. Sadly, it seems like too many people are concerned with politicking rather than governing. There is a difference.
