So my dad's application is up at sorting_elite, and everybody seems to love him, which is great.

There also seems to be a large fraction who think he's a 'Puff. At which point my eyes cross in disbelief and I'm sitting here going what? Where are you getting that from?

Okay, yeah, he does have some Hufflepuff qualities, but from the perspective of living with the man, Hufflepuff is not what I'd call his strongest house.

Still, if that's where he gets sorted at least it means I won't have to compete with him for the house cup.

And it does mean I don't have to worry about him getting squibbed.

I saw that he was getting a lot of Puff votes... and I agree it's not his strongest house. I guess that I can see where it is coming from, because he has a lot of the values usually associated with Puff...

But I think that after living so much life and raising a family, you probably develop a lot of those qualities also (I mean, as long as you're a good parent and stuff...)

Then again, I am often confused by the sorting at HE. Sometimes I want to smack people for not recognizing Claws. *shrug*

hard to spot a Ravenclaw

The problem with having a house associated with intelligence, wisdom and wit is that EVERYONE in a sorting community considers themselves intelligent, wise and witty. Therefore, they discount those traits, in favor of other sorting characteristics that tend to exclude Ravenclaw.

In the Harry Potter world, all you need to be a Gryffindor is self-confidence, passion and raw emotion, but to really succeed, you need to be intelligently passionate. The same holds true for other houses.

I guess that for a Ravenclaw push, you'd have to start with an intelligent, well-reasoned and well-written application, then strip out all passion (Gryffindor), all humanity (Hufflepuff) and all ambition (Slytherin) to keep from getting sorted there. You'd be left with such a bland application it would probably get squibbed.

Oh well, even if eagles are rare, theye still seem to rule the House Cup competitions. And, being a Boy Scout leader, I'm supposed to push for eagles.

It's true. I notice very often that people make statements about considering Ravenclaw for an individual, but then the person was "too feeling" or "not logical enough" or any of a plethora of excuses.

The thing is, I'm not always particularly logical. And I'm extremely emotional. I've got a lot of humanitarian interests, some goals, and a lot of passion... but all of those traits manifest, at least in part, in conjunction with my desire to learn.

Most of my life is lived through a lens of learning. I try to learn from every experience. A lot of my advice to people contains statements about learning from mistakes.

I think I just get frustrated being in a house that is so often misunderstood, because it feels like I am being misunderstood as a result. Also, it means that I end up missing out on cool new friends, because everyone steals them for another house. ;)

Really? We 'puffs tend to feel that the other houses love to grab all the cool canidates too, so I know how you feel.

For me, I look for genuine curiosity and a love of learning new things for my Ravenclaw vibe. If I see that, and there's a tendency to do a lot of analysis and digging into things in the books, I'll vote 'Claw unless there is some other vibe beating my head in and screaming to be a different house.

There's been a few times where I see the majority of Ravenclaw claiming an applicant for ourselves... and yet the person ends up going to another house. It always makes me so sad.

Yeah, I know a lot of people get irked by the simplistic "Oh, you're smrt, therefore you should be in Ravenclaw," but given my propensity for looking up everything, etc., I tend to think it really would be the most appropriate House for _me_. I definitely don't have the bravery type traits for Gryffindor, the ambition for Slytherin, or probably the anything for Hufflepuff.

I'd say from my experience with you that you're probably a Ravenpuff cross, actually, with Ravenclaw predominant. You've got the curiousity and love of learning that is very 'Claw, and your determination to be honest and some of the other things I've heard from you are very 'Puff.

The traits I seem to associate with Ravenclaw (for our smaller community ;-)) are a passion to learn even if the knowledge isn't necessarily needed right now - because a Slytherin would be an avid learner if the information would be useful to them.
Also, creativity. I believe Ravenclaw's don't necessarily pour that thirst for learning into just books, it can also come through in art, music etc. It's just an overwhelming passion to learn and to understand things.

I put your father where he belongs - in Ravenclaw.

And he'll be such an asset to the community - we all saw that right away. (Personally - I'm thrilled not to be the oldest anymore.)

I checked your public user's information. Since I've got you beat by about nine years, I guess I get the title. I don't think I'm the oldest Harry Potter fan. The former Scoutmaster of our troop, and [livejournal.com profile] mari4212's 7th and 8th grade teacher checks out the movies as they come out, and quotes from them in class. He's now 65, so he has me beat.

My mother-in-law is 70. It's about the only fantasy series she does like. :)

I've gotten used to feeling ancient in H_E, but they're a nice bunch.

I think Destiny makes a pretty good point.

That, and I think that people were looking for excuses a chance to have you in the same house together, just to up the cuteness factor.

I voted him into Ravenclaw. *clings*

Sorting confusion

The Eagles still seem to be in the lead to get me so far.

Prior to the start of sorting, I would have predicted a fight between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, with Hufflepuff a distant third and no Slytherin votes. So far, the lions want me to be a lion (13 G votes, 9 R votes, 4 H votes), the eagles want me to be an eagle (14 R votes, 9 H votes, 3 G votes) and the badgers are all over the place (16 H votes, 16 R votes, 9 G votes). The snakes think I'm a badger (9 H votes, 6 R votes and 2 G votes). There's also a number of eagles who sorted me into Hufflepuff that said they'd love for me to be sorted as an Eagle instead, but that's matched by an equal number of badgers with the same type of answer. Voting matrix analysis is probably my eagle side coming out.

Maybe part of the reason, especially from the badgers is that they think "He's cool, I'd like to have him in my house".

Seriously, I think of the Boy Scout references and my positive/negative characteristics as much more of Gryffindor traits, and the length of my answer, my house descriptions and my being a thinker instead of a feeler as Ravenclaw characteristics. I can't explain it any more than you can.

You're a Ravenclaw. So far as I know, we're the only ones who actually tabulate and compare our votes. Because it's fun/

I made a spreadsheet myself.

Not only that, but I've been known to record my votes on a private post in my livejournal so I know how I fared.

Do you mean tracking my votes vs. how the community as a whole votes? I've been tracking my votes, my daughters and the community votes for the last month and a half. I still need to get my Slythdar calibrated. The wittiest applicants that the snakes grab hold of usually vibe like Ravenclaws to me.

I gave you to the Eagles. You have some Puff in you --and I'd even go so far as putting it as a strong second house for you-- but you're too Claw to not be an Eagle.

... Alright I blame the heat, that made no sense.

Hmm. I kept a running tally of the votes I recieved, but I didn't cross reference them along house lines. I think that's where I divide from being a 'Claw.

Here's the thing. Like I said in my vote, your dad reminds me of an older, male version of myself. I know that I'm right on the line between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, and I've had several housemates tell me in private that they love me but sincerely believe I was mis-sorted. So I can certainly see why a Gryffindor vote (which, if I remember right, is what you gave him) is appropriate.

If I were just sorting purely 100% off of which house he was the most like, I might have gone Gryffindor by a nose. But from what I know of the community, I think he'd be more comfortable with us than with the Lions as a whole (no offense to any H_E Gryffs who are reading this!) - it's just the impression I had. (That, and I think the Puffs might be more comfortable than Gryffs with the idea of someone's dad in their common room - I'm making that guess because the person who pointed out the typical H_E demographic is in Gryffindor.)

True. Maybe part of it is that Mom and I are so strongly Hufflepuff, in contrast he looks much less Hufflepuff to us than he might to others.

*heh* I know how that is - my other half is SO DAMN GRYFFINDOR that I look like a Slytherpuff in comparison. :P
