mari4212: Mr. Tumnus inviting Lucy to tea (mr. tumnus)
[personal profile] mari4212
Okay, the first person to invent a way to keep your tea hot in your cup all the time you're drinking it will earn the rights to my first-born child. It's so annoying to have to go back and re-heat the tea three times in the course of drinking it.

I'm just lucky that I don't mind the taste of re-heated tea, otherwise I'd spend more of a fortune on teabags than I'd care to think about. (Okay, so technically my mother would be paying for them, but you get the idea.)

Bardic Circle tonight for Medieval Society. I'm bringing along "The Widow's Moor" aka "The song that made Darren blush bright red".

I can think of two options for your tea:

A cup warmer.

Or.

A thermal cup.

:)

A cup warmer won't work here at the dorm. It's restricted as a potential fire hazard.

The insulated cup is something I'm looking into getting.

I just drink my tea cold when it gets cold. I never really mind. However, I am pretty obsessive about not making tea unless the water has reached a really roiling boil.

Your song sounds interesting!

It's a great song - a VERY lonely widow lives alone on a moor. The devil offers to relieve her loneliness and satisfy her craving for a man for a night, but in return, she has to surrender her soul. She proves to be insatiable, and the devil has to slink away, exhausted in the wee early morning.

It depends on what variety the tea is, whether or not I'll drink it cold. A few of the ones I have taste wonderful hot, but disgusting cold.

Song lyrics:
High upon a lonely moor a widdow lived alone.
An in she kept and as she slept the pillow heard her moan.
"Oh many there's the traveler, that's spent the night with me,
There's not a man in all creation gives content to me.
For some can manage once or twice, and some make three or four.
It seems to me a raritiy is the man who can do more.
I'll do anything to find him, in heaven or in hell."
And as these words were spoken then she heard the front door bell.

Chorus:
And the wind blew cold and lonely,
across that widow's moor,
And she never ever turned away
a traveler from the door.

So boldly then the widow ran
And the door she opened wide.
And as she did a tall and handsome stranger stepped inside.
She gave him bread and brandy, and when the day was sped,
He said "Me dear, now have no fear, for it's time to go to bed.
For I've heard you call way down below and I've come to see you right.
But you must come to hell with me if I can last the night."
She said, "You randy devil," to this bargin and agreed.
For hell one earth or hell in hell it's all the same to me.

Chorus

And when they both fell into bed the Devil was working well.
He thought before the night was through that she'd be in his hell.
But when they came to number nine the widow cried out "More!"
And when the twelth time came around again she cried for more.
At twenty-five the Devil felt compelled to take a rest.
The widow she said, "Come raise your head and put me to the test!"
At sixty-nine the widow laughed, "Again, again!" she cried.
The Devil he said, "Well I can see just how your husband died."

Chorus

At Ninty-nine the Devil he began to cry and weep.
He said, "I'll give you anything, if I can go to sleep."
Before the morning light was up, the Devil hobbled forth.
The widow still not satisfied once more was left alone.
And as she lay and grumbled, she thought of ninty-nine.
If only that old Devil could have made it one more time.
I'll call him up again tonight to see what can be done.
With a little more application, he could have made the ton.
But when she called to him that night, no Devil did appear.
For the first time in eternity, the Devil he shook with fear.
He said, "Of all the torment I've witnessed here in hell,
I never knew what pain was, till I rang your front door bell."

Chorus twice.

Cue all the girls laughing, all the guys turning interesting colors.

*scratches head* How long does it take you to drink a cup of tea? :P

And you could use a tea cosy! Except made for a cup, not a teapot. (Do you knit? Because you can probably find a free pattern online.)

Found a few, all crochet.

One! Two!

Three!

Well, I start off well, and get 1/4 to 1/3 down. Then I set the cup down for a second to scroll down on my computer, or to turn a page in a book. 15-20 minutes later, I remeber I have tea again.

Err, perhaps I need to figure out a cure for absentminded bookwormishness, and then my tea problem will be solved.

Somewhere recently I saw a pattern for a felted tea cup cozy. It might not keep your tea hot for hours, but it's supposed to help a little. I'll look for it; it might've been in the last issue of Spin-Off.

Found it; it was in an online spinning mag, so I was close. There's even a pattern for a lid. If you don't feel like learning spinning just now, you could substitute something like Lamb's Pride or Nature Spun or Cascade 220. Any wool or wool/mohair blend that's worsted to bulky weight.

I also found this, which is crocheted, not knit.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that and see if I can adapt the pattern.

Can you tell I'm the first guy to respond to this?

Seriously though, something tells me nothing would make you happier than to be able to knit yourself your own tea cozy.

Ooh, fire!

(why yes I am a science geek, however could you tell?)

I'm going to have to look into making one of those tea cozies.

Thermal cups. They work, I got [livejournal.com profile] furiosity one for Christmas. they're awesome and shiny! (If steel, literally so.)

Three possibilities:

1) the quilted/felted/crocheted/knitted tea cosy, except that this will be one more barrier to actually drinking the tea.

2) a combinaton hotplate and teacup

3) an insulated travel mug.being metal, you'd have to heat the water in one cup, then brew the tea in the travel mug.

Let us know which one will work best, and we'll see about getting you fixed up on the upcoming break.

Besides, your Mom and I have first claims on your first-born child anyway - being grandparents.

The felted cozy I linked to has a dip for drinking built into the pattern.

(Well, technically, none of the other commenters would claim her first-born, anyway, because they didn't invent the things they're suggesting.)

Actually, we have to wait on the grandparent thing anyway - [livejournal.com profile] mari4212's older sister is seriously dating, but it will be a couple of years for them, if they do end up together. Noneof the rest of the kids are anywhere close to settling down.

1. The knitted/felted thing might work, if I remember to put it on the cup when I'm making the tea.

2. Dorm policy, no hotplates. (Firehazards)

3. That also could work.

Okay Daddy, you have first dibs on the grandkids. But first I have to finish college and find a guy I wouldn't mind having those kids with. The latter is proving far more difficult than the former.

Work completely exploded yesterday, and today's looking like it's on the same path (i.e. that whole emailing you thing just couldn't conceivably happen). It's just...argh...one thing to type a semi-important (we are talking TEA here) comment but another to have to pull out papers and use real, heavy brain ammunition. *le sigh*

You know, I'm with you on this tea thing. It's one thing to let a cup of green with honey go cold since they sell that as iced tea anyway, but it doesn't always suit another type...

Do you ever reuse a bag? Sometimes, if a tea is particularly strong, like this one vanilla I have, I'll use a bag twice. :)

Date: 2006-09-13 04:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mari4212.livejournal.com
There are a lot of teas where I'll reuse the bag, most of my teabags have enough for a double steeping.

I think I have the next lesson, a generic overview of ethical systems, somewhere on my computer. I was thinking we could do that next, and then have you take over and do the next lessons on proper arguement structure and support. I know we had at least one of those written in draft form.

Date: 2006-09-13 05:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] traceria.livejournal.com
That sounds good. Makes sense, too. Since they've been asked about their expectations, then you can follow up with some of what we'll eventually get into in the form of the overview.

One thing I wanted to get your opinion on was this: Who will tally up homework points every week? The primary person giving the lesson/assignment? The person posting the next lesson assignment (since they'll already be on the community and can easily navigate to the previous post and comments)? Thoughts?

Okay, so the next lesson will have to do with ethical systems, and then I will dig up the arguments one. I have a feeling that the left-over argument stuff won't take long to explain, so I will probably just tag it onto what I have so far. Really, I will get to it..always do..even if it's last minute. *sheepish grin*

I have this little hotplate kind of thing, but its for a tea cup. You plug it in and set the tea mug on top of it, and it keeps it warm. *luvs her teahotplate*

Date: 2006-09-13 04:41 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mari4212.livejournal.com
Dorm policy = no hotplates because of the fire risk. And yet they allow hairdryers, which are actually more of a risk than hotplates. Special snowflake logic applies here.

That does sound like a cool idea for home though.
