The story of George the Badger
Sep. 20th, 2006 11:34 pmOkay, I mentioned this in my poll, and several non-Hufflepuffs sounded interested in learning about George the Badger. (Quick summary for non-H_E'Puffs, George was the Hufflepuff mascot back when I first joined the house, but he disappeared almost immediately after I was sorted.)
Long ago, in the misty beginnings of Hogwarts Elite, there was a house called Hufflepuff, which was filled with those students who were loyal, hardworking, fair, or just too insane to fit into the other houses.
And in that far-off time, a young badger came to live with those students, and they named him George. George loved his Hufflepuffs. They played with him, they fed him cookies, they let him ride around in their bookbags so that he could see the other parts of the castle without having to climb up and down the many staircases. It was a very good place to be a badger.
George had many interesting adventures while he was with his Hufflepuffs. One weekend, he was kidnapped by the Slytherins, who took him down to the dungeons and died his white streak green. Then he was rescued and taken back to the Hufflepuff dorms, where he was thoroughly cuddled and washed by the students, till his streak was back to being pristine white and his fur had been fluffed from the many hugs.
One day, when the students made their pilgrimage down to Hogsmeade, George followed after them instead of staying safely up at the castle. For a while it was great fun, prancing around and enjoying the new sights and smells. He enjoyed watching his Hufflepuffs play and work at Hogsmeade.
But George was still a very small badger, and after a weekend of such excitement, he fell fast asleep while still at Hogsmeade. When he woke up the next morning, he saw that all of the shops had closed up and that he was all alone. His Hufflepuffs had returned to the school the previous evening, and without them there to follow, George was lost. He wandered great distances, always hoping to find his way back home to the castle and the Hufflepuffs he loved.
Someday, perhaps, I will tell you all of the adventures he had on his journey as he traveled from country to country, about the time that he met the lions and talked to a snake and even once visited an eagle's nest and played with the eagle's younglings. Today, however, I wish to tell you about how George found his way home, for you see, he has just done so and told his story to me.
George wandered around the world for over a year, catching rides on cars, and trains, and boats, and in one case, a basket on the back of a bicycle, always looking for a Hufflepuff to take him back to his beloved common room. He did not know why he came to my college in particular, only that he felt sure that someone there would see him and recognize him. When he saw me exit the library with a plushie badger perched in my purse, he knew he had found a Hufflepuff. We have spent the past few hours discussing his adventures over cookies and tea, and he wants to know if he can return home.
So now I turn to you, my fellow Hufflepuffs, and ask you. Do you want to let George come back and be our mascot again? He's missed us all terribly and desperately wants to meet those who have joined since he was lost.
And really, can you say no to a face like this?
