Until yesterday, I was still rather sheltered about Katrina. I knew that it had hit, and I knew that there were some bad reports, but I didn't believe it was anywhere near the disaster I heard about yesterday.
And so my first response was horror, and a vague need to help, but I lack means. I'm donating to the red cross through school, and I'm hoping we have another blood drive soon, but I can't do much on a personal level to help.
My second response came from reading the reports on what was happening down there from other people's livejournals. The links to reports on the inefficiency, and the devastation, and the damage done by people in charge sticking their heads in the sand.
this link, http://www.livejournal.com/users/naomikritzer/61552.html , has a pretty good list of some of the things that have me angriest.
This is America, we have the resources to help these people, why aren't we doing so?
