I love these children. I love the kids. There is a reason they are all still alive.

Josie woke up last night with a fever, and her parents still sent her in today. Normally, she's our best kid, quiet, calm, old enough to tell us in words what's wrong, young enough that she doesn't gibber-gabber endlessly. She can deal with us telling her to wait a minute while we deal with the younger ones. Today, she was sick, miserable, and fussy. We ended up calling her mom midway through the day, she needed to go home and get away from the other kids and the noise and confusion.

Riley discovered a new way to play. He'd climb up on the couch, and start throughing himself arround from side to side. We spent a good part of the afternoon keeping him off of the couch and explaining to him how cracking his skull open by jumping head first off of a couch onto a hard would floor would not be a good thing. He just glared at us. Fortunately, his father arrived and took him out of our hands. Apparently he's been pulling that trick at home as well. Don't you just love one year olds with no comprehension of cause and effect?

And finally, Audrey decided that she was going to try to pull up to a stand on the vacuum cleaner. Not exactly a stable surface to begin with, and it wasn't helped by her insistance on grabbing onto the detachable part of the machine. Needless to say, she ended up on her back, shrieking loud enough to pierce a few eardrums. She's also reached the point where she doesn't want to share, and that includes pulling a hissy fit whenever one of the other kids comes within two feet of a toy that she might want to play with sometime in the next year. The only bright point is that she's still easily distracted. Of course, sometimes her screams are justified, usually when Riley has either stepped on her fingers or sat down on top of her.

Tommorow will be better. The heat wave is supposed to subside overnight, and there's only Audrey tommorow. Plus, I get to spend the afternoon with a friend of mine instead of dealing with fussy babies.

And people wonder why I want to wait to have kids.
