Summary: John had a tendency to piss people off.
Dad had this thing where he never stopped to consider how anyone else was going to take what he said. He just took it for granted that you’d understand exactly what he meant and not take offense at stupid things like lack of tact or a suggestion phrased as an order.
Most of the time, it meant that you could trust that Dad would say exactly what he felt about any subject, and you wouldn’t have to try to dredge it through five different filters to figure out the truth. Sometimes, however, it meant that he’d accidentally insult one of their friends, and then refuse to back down when whoever it was got pissed.
Neither Dean nor Dad were ever good at figuring out when Dad was going over the line before it happened. That was something Sam had done for them. When Sam had been around, he’d been good at reading people, at telling when they’d had it with the eldest of the Winchesters. Dean had gotten good at reading Sam’s signals, and half the time he’d be able to stop Dad before it went too far and they ended up getting punched or chased off with a shotgun. Sam’s ability to do the whole diplomacy gig was probably the only reason they were still in contact with most of the other hunters they knew about, and Dean still wasn’t sure how the heck his brother had developed the talent in the first place.
But with Sam gone off to Stanford, they were floundering. Dad was bouncing between being pissed with Sam for leaving, and worrying his head off about him, and Dean wasn’t much different, except that he tended to combine both emotions into one big tangled heap instead of switching back and forth about it. Dean didn’t do diplomacy any more than Dad did, and even he could see where the both of them being messes about the whole deal wasn't going to help them win friends and influence people.
So maybe it wasn’t surprising that what had started off as a simple conversation with Bobby about how the heck phoukas had ended up getting here from Ireland was ending with John Winchester being run out of a junkyard with an ass filled with rock salt. Or that it was followed with a warning not to come back anytime soon if he couldn’t keep his head out of his hind end. Bobby never really had been one to let you call him eight kinds of stupid lightly, especially not when he actually probably knew more about supernatural creatures than you did.
About the only surprising thing about the whole matter, actually, was that Dean hadn’t managed to have the same thing happen to himself first, given the fact that his temper was even worse than his father’s these days. He just had to leave to go pick the salt out of Dad’s ass before John got his stubbornness into high gear and decided to try and do his own first aid.
There were days when being John Winchester’s son seriously sucked.
