Jul. 15th, 2007 05:56 pmSo I waited to see OoTP until yesterday, and then I went and saw it with
lady_tigerfish, my brother, and both her father and mine, with the comfort of knowing that if it was as bad as some of the other movies have been, she would be there to mock it with me.
So of course, I actually ended up liking this one. Will wonders never cease.
Things I really liked.
1. Evanna Lynch as Luna. She nailed it. Flat out nailed it, and played Luna with subtlety and grace. And she just got Luna down perfectly. So much love.
2. Umbridge. Again, the actress just nailed the part. And played the first detention scene so utterly sadistically that I was horrified. And then mentally cheering, because it was exactly right for that scene in the book.
3. Thestrals! So cute. So much love.
4. Someone sat Emma Watson down and gave her acting lessons. So much better than her previous performances. By a mile.
5. Bellatrix was appropriately disturbing.
6. Sirius's death scene and Harry and Remus's responses were dead on. Especially Remus.
7. I actually really enjoyed Grawp.
Overall, I think they did a good job of transitioning the book into the movie. And I do think it's a lot better of a translation than any of the others have been.
Things of not love:
1. There was no real sense of this being a year. They didn't show time passing well, nor did they do a good job of setting things up as being inter-related.
2. Kreacher was left in, but his role in Sirius's death being cut out so much means that he doesn't really have a purpose.
3. We're still dealing with the fallout of things not being properly established earlier onwards in previous movies. So Snape's worst memory scene felt pointless and unconnected to anything.
4. What the heck was up with Dumbledore and Voldemort taking a page out of "The Two Magicians" with their battle. The fire-snake thing and the water globe were pointless, if nice special effects.
5. Didn't like the end possession of Harry by Voldemort. Especially pulling in the "You've never felt love" bit so soon. It just felt far too forced, and inappropriate for what we know Harry was feeling from the books.
There were other quibbles, but overall it worked as a movie for me.
