From the first year he’d taught at Hogwarts, he’d always found a few children who needed extra attention. Some, like the young Tom Riddle, because they reminded him too much of another intelligent, charismatic boy with dangerous dreams. Others, students like Minerva had been, for the simple joy of watching a brilliant mind flourish under the correct tutelage.
Still others, for more sobering reasons, when Remus and countless others struggling under burdens which seemed too great to be placed upon young shoulders. Harry was but the latest and most staggeringly unfair example of the type.
And then there were the students like the one he’d just encountered, waltzing alone and barefoot in an empty classroom, dancing music that she alone seemed to hear. Luminescent children, all of them, so comfortable in their own understanding of who they were that nothing could shatter them. Children who could smile with no pain in their eyes, no matter what their circumstances were. Children like the girl his sister had been, so very long ago.
Those were the children who never failed to make him smile. They were the ones who would bring wonders to the world, who shattered old conventions and stalemates. They were the ones who reminded him why he taught.

She hadn’t quite known what to make of Kaylee, when she’d first met her. Inara was far more used to the sophisticated doublespeak of the highest classes on Shinon, to the endless series of games and politics designed to trip the unwary that was conversation in the Core.
Kaylee was an oddity, cheerful and irrepressible, frank in her admiration for Innara’s graceful, impeccably tailored garments, and just as straightforward in her liking for Inara herself. Somehow she cut through all the shields Inara had worked so hard to build up around herself, somehow she found the desperate longing for friendship that she had hidden from even her own sight.
Kaylee looked at Inara and saw a woman who needed a friend, and she hadn’t hesitated to become one. In what seemed like an impossibly short time, she’d become as close as a little sister, closer than women of the Guild that she’d known her entire life.
So when Inara looked on as the new doctor worked to close that awful hole in Kaylee’s side, all she could do was pray. Pray that the quip she’d heard Mal say so many times proved truthful, prayed that there really was no power in the ‘verse that could keep Kaylee from being cheerful. Not even death.

And the Inara-Kaylee is gold. Such an unlikely friendship, but so wonderful. :)
