So the meme was: comment, and I'll give five topics that I associate with you to write about.

I commented on [livejournal.com profile] chiefbutz's entry, and he gave me these five:

1. Mother/Mama: For some reason, my last year of college, I went from just being one of the group to being the person everyone else looked to as a substitute mother, at least when it came to handing out tea, sympathy, and practical advice. By about midway through September, people were calling me Mari-mama or straight out Mommy. You'll have to ask my friends how they all chose for me to be the mother figure, I just slotted into the role after everyone started coming to me.

2. Firefly: Like most Joss Whedon, I find that Firefly is a show that I love to watch, and enjoy discussing, but never quite move into being actively fannish about. I've discussed before about the influence worldviews have on my ability to engage in a show, and Whedon's assumptions about how the world basically functions aren't exactly a perfect fit for me, so there's always a bit of a leap that I need to make when I watch the show, and it just pulls me sufficiently out of the show to want to be that fannish. Or it might just be that Firefly is one of the shows that I just consider rather complete, there's little I feel the need to fix or explore on my own.

On the other hand, I love so much about Firefly that I do find myself making more of an effort to be fannish than I normally would in a situation like this. I loved all of the characters, with a special fondness for Book, Kaylee, and Simon. As per usual with Whedon, I also just flailed at his prose and building of dialect, because he's pretty darn fantastic with it. And if I'm going to be sitting in a dorm room hanging out with my friends, Firefly is one of the two series I'd automatically put on if we wanted to watch something, because all of us loved it.

3. Fan Fiction: I love to read and write fanfic. I love the exploration of ideas and characters that fanfic can do where a series can't, I love the further connections to the characters I already have a commitment to (I'm very character-centric when it comes to fiction, I need to have someone I'm interested in to stay interested in the book, no matter what the overall plot is). And since I work through things by writing them down, writing and reading fanfic is a good way for me to explore issues or concerns that I have about a character or situation. Most of my fics tend to be character studies to a greater or lesser extent, with only as much plot as I need to hook my exploration of a character's mindset or personality upon.

And Jason, I have no idea if that's what you were thinking about with me and fanfic, but that's what came out.

4. Massages: So, yeah, I've been giving backrubs for years. I love doing it, I love the fact that I can sit there and with a little time and a bit of hard-practiced skills, I can make someone feel better. It's something concrete that I can point to at the end of the day, that I did something and it helped someone, made their day better, relieved some of their stress and pain. There's a reason I'm studying it right now as my back-up plan.

Also, there's a bit of an ego-boost when you just touch someone and they go limp, or when they're talking about how good it felt for hours afterwards. I'm as susceptible to that as anyone. *grins sheepishly*

5. Blushing: This is definitely a sign that you know me in real life, [livejournal.com profile] chiefbutz. Anyone who has met me face to face learns sooner or later that it is terribly easy to get me to blush a darker red than my hair. Various people have favorite triggers they'll use on me, ranging from giving me a compliment to most forms of innuendo. My Hufflepuffs at school had an ongoing contest with themselves to see how many times they could get me to blush over the course of a one-hour meeting. The limit really proved to be how long it took me to stop blushing before they could trigger another one.
