Things learned this week:
1. Whole wheat flour will eventually work as a thickener for a white sauce, like normal white flour, but it takes longer and the end texture is a bit grainier.
2. Twelve-year-old boys can be quite helpful in the kitchen. Actually, this twelve-year-old boy is so polite and intelligent he's making me rethink my position on pre-teen boys.
3. Eight-year-old girls, on the other hand, are not so helpful. Especially when they're normally hyperactive and you add in being hungry and over-tired.
4. I really hate electric burners.
5. Curry goes over surprisingly well with my host family, especially when combined with Katie bringing along ice cream for dessert.
6. Nine in the evening is way too late for an eight-year old to be getting dinner, especially something she's never tried before. Temper-tantrums galore. Her mother put up with them exactly like my mother did; not at all. Time outs are wonderful.

Those four things brought to you courtesy of offering to make dinner at 8:30 last night when my host family's father hadn't shown up and started cooking by then. The older two children were quite helpful, the youngest...not so much. Eventually I ordered her out of the kitchen.

Overall, the host family situation has been going smoothly. I tend to eat dinner with them, and provide for myself on lunches and breakfast. The kids had their last day of school yesterday, hence me spending the entire day at school, even though I get out of work earlier today. I might just come down here tomorrow as well, and type up my blackboard responses for two of my classes here, instead of staying all day there. Even though the kids have been pretty well-behaved, the youngest is, like I mentioned, very hyper and very clingy, and I've reached the status of favorite toy, to be played with as much as possible.

They'll be gone this weekend, then back next week while their mother finishes off her last days of class and everything else finishes up. I think they're scheduled to drive out for Miami sometime late next week, and Katie and I will have the house to ourselves. And since Katie's mostly out from 7:30 in the morning till 9:00 at night, that means that most of the time, I'll have the house to myself.

Life has been going well at school also. I did get in touch with Dr. Pieper, ironically stopping by his office five seconds after he'd finished sending the e-mail to me and the other students describing the independent study method we'd be taking in this class. So that makes another class where I just have to read the book by myself and take some tests. And in my Exercise and Sports Psychology class, we today got handed the first take home test, which isn't due until the Monday after next, due to Memorial Day and a conference he's going to next weekend that he's leaving for on Wednesday. And people are saying I have a heavy load for summer? *blinks*
