So, [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat mentioned that it's about that time of year to re-do the "fuck you, she's awesome" meme. Which is, pretty much, to post about all the female characters in various fandoms that you like. Because, bizarrely, there are some people out there in famdom who insist that there are no female characters out there that they like. And when there are this many awesome characters available, there's no reason for that.

It might take me several posts to put up all the female characters I enjoy, at least when I'm also including a brief explanation of why they're so great.

Starting with fandoms I'm currently reading/watching:

The Lost World

Marguerite Krux: So she's a strong, intelligent woman, was a triple agent between the British and the Germans during WW1, as well as being at some point an international jewel thief (maybe). She's an orphan who joins the whole expedition as a method of getting something for someone who promised her her birth certificate as a link to help her find who her parents were. She's ruthless in pursuit of her goals, and slow to bond with the others, and her preferred method of getting out of any dangerous situation is to manipulate her way into being in total control. She is often hampered in this by her friends blundering straight ahead/yelling at her for betraying them when she's actually working to rescue all of them with the least possible bloodshed. She's also snarky as all get out, prone to whining, and never lets you see all of her at once. She's the most complicated and fun character on the show, and she's a different personality to each other character, depending on what they give out to her.

Veronica Layton: Okay, this woman survived eleven years on her own, in an Amazonian rain forest, with dinosaurs, and emerged saner than anyone who actually arrived on the expedition was to begin with. She's kind, responsible, forthright, a tad bit self-righteous, and I'm pretty convinced that she spent most of the first season rolling her eyes while off camera wondering how these idiots managed to live long enough to get onto the Plateau and risk their lives in wildly adventurous ways that she hadn't come up with her entire life there.

NCIS

Kate Todd: Okay, so she was only there two seasons, but Kate was awesome. She was sassy, she was intelligent, she could beat her teammates in a fight with one hand tied behind her back (with the possible exception of Gibbs, who's been doing the whole thing longer and is thus sneakier), and she's one part in one of the best female friendships I've seen on a tv show. She was tough, but also rather compassionate and empathetic, and the sibling relationship between her and Tony was so much fun to watch.

Abby Sciuto: Perky, happy, cheerful Gothchick labrat, MADE OF WIN. This girl names her mass spectrometer, mainlines caffeine, has a farting stuffed animal hippo named Bert, gets away with calling Gibbs her 'silver haired fox', and is pretty much the shining heart of NCIS. Plus, pretty much every time she's placed in danger, she gets herself out just fine. Seriously, one time she ended up wrapping the guy who tried to kill her in about seven layers of duct tape before dumping her soda over him, and the other time she ended up tazering the guy into submission after he'd cornered her in a van. If yow watch NCIS, you must love Abby. It is a rule of the universe.

Ziva David: She's so unpopular in fandom, and I flail at explaining why. Except that she did come in after Kate died, and I guess people still resent her for that. She's very different from Kate, a lot less open, but she's still a fantastic part of the team. She's brilliant, sharp, passionate, and a lot more caring than she gets credit for. And I love the malapropisms, and the reminders of how many different ways she can murder someone with a paperclip.

Still to come in terms of fandoms that I need to write squee over:
Chronicles of Narnia, Babylon 5, Discworld, JAG

B5: Na'Toth... just saying.

I'm in the process of re-watching B5, it's been a few years since I last saw all of it. Na'Toth was G'Kar's assistant, correct?

Mostly I remember Ivanova being made of awesome, and Delenn being rather cool as well.

I've got the third season out of the library, and I'll probably go for the other seasons after I've gotten through this one. So B5 is going to be at the end of my list of squee, just to let me refresh my memory.
