Jun. 7th, 2009 09:09 pmYou may be aware that I've been missing aspects of being at college, oh, since about this fall when I would normally have been heading back there. Things like having wide-ranging intellectual-heavy discussions and geeking out around people who are not family members/not interacting just on lj.
Today, I am no longer missing my college group quite so much. Because today, we had a book discussion group at church, and people brought in whatever books they were currently reading/obsessed with, and told everyone else about them. And that led to random disucssions about how sci-fi and philosophy are related, and discussions of WW1, the Crusades, Biblical archaeological finds, and the impacts of fundamentalism on culture. In the space of an hour, and we only stopped then because we'd promised the sexton we'd leave at 1ish.
*sighs contentedly* This is yet another reason why I love my church.
In a totally unrelated vein, would any of you be interested in a Star Trek McCoy meta? Mostly focused on how awesome he is and TOS canon? I, err, may have been asked a few times why the heck he's my favorite character of the original series, and it's put me in a squeeing-about-the-character mindspace.

Date: 2009-06-08 01:25 am (UTC)I totally promise I wouldn't bring porn.Bones McCoy. Utter love. I'd forgotten how awesome he was until I was reminded by the new movie and how utterly perfectly channeled he was.

Date: 2009-06-08 10:15 am (UTC)It's also used within academia sometimes to refer to an overarching frame or the stuff going on behind what's out on the surface. I had a theology teacher who was always urging us to consider not only the simple narrative of the text, but how it slotted into the overarching metanarrative, the "story behind the story".
