On varying perceptions.

First, a bit of a poll: Would you, having known me online for a while, call me driven or ambitious? Why or why not?

The reason I'm asking is that it came up today in class. Towards the end of our first Asian Theory class, the concept of astrology and astrological signs came up. Pretty much everyone else in the room identified fairly well with their sign, and I mentioned that I'd never really seen myself as a Capricorn, especially when it came to things like ambition and competitiveness.

Everyone else in the class started talking about how I really was very driven/ambitious, just look at my GPA. And i was blinking and really couldn't see where they were coming from. Because one, I don't invest much in my grades, and two, this is, frankly, an easy program and I'm absolutely coasting here.

I'd say a good deal of it is relative. But, if you don't feel like you put any particular amount of effort into accomplishing goals--then I'd say that you know you best. Doing a good job at something doesn't always mean that one is driven or ambitious.

I mean, I don't think you're very competitive...I think you're driven in other things, like caring for people. And I *know* that GPA means *nothing* as far as drive and ambition go. Like [livejournal.com profile] cacophonesque said, doing a good job doesn't mean you're particularly driven.

You're a Hufflepuff, not a Slytherin. 'nuff said?

I think you're driven. Not so much in the stomping over everything/one that gets in your way, but certainly with your determination. I mean, when you were doing your degree, and wanted to go into physio, you kept going and going and going with the physics, giving it every shot. It may not have worked out, but damn, you certainly worked for it.

And kinda like what LJ says - you may not have ambition in the sense of fame and power, but I think it certainly comes out in regards to people and caring for them.

(Having said this, when star sign generalisations come into it, I always think of you as a fish. So. *shrugs*)

Just following suit to give a reasonable reason why you don't match up to your astro sign is the fact that Astrology is based on a whole lot more than just your sun sign, which is what Capricorn is to you. Then you have find out what all your other planets signs are, and your ascendant, and a lot of other complex calculations to actually even begin a real astro report. The sun sign thing newspapers is just for entertainment. This is only one reason.

But, as a person who has seen you in real life, you can be determined about the things you believe in, and that's something I admire about you. I even loved how when sorting you could always find a reason why someone should be in Hufflepuff. It always makes me smile when I think about that.
