Fanfic Year in review meme
Jan. 3rd, 2011 05:13 pmThis year I wrote and posted:
31 stories, most of them short stories in response to a ficmeme. Plus about 4 different WIPs, including Nano.
Overall Thoughts
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Definitely more fic. I never thought I’d do Nano, and definitely didn’t think I’d actually hit 50K. Plus, there was that big jolt in terms of the number of fics, due to participating in a Women are Awesome ficathon.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
I played a lot with fandoms that I wouldn’t have thought earlier. Again, that’s a response to a few ficathons, as I don’t think I’d have been tempted by Bride and Prejudice or 1632 if it weren’t for the Awesome Characters of Color ficmeme. I also never thought I’d write Merlin, even though I liked watching the show, but Gwen kind of took over my brain for a little bit there.
Also, original fics. I’ve written two of them this year, which makes two more than I thought I would.
What's your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
My favorite of the year would probably be Meditation, my Ziva fic. Part of it is that that was a WIP that I’d struggled to complete, and the other part of it is that I really love her as a character and this was a fun exploration.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Plot. I did a lot more plotting and dialogue this year than I’ve previously been comfortable trying, and I think that’s been a fun place to push myself. I’d never been comfortable doing either before. Now I’ve got two WIP that both have coherent plots going on, and that’s both interesting and terrifying.
From my past year of writing, what was....
My best story of this year
Best is really hard for me to be objective about. Probably Meditation, again, or Five People Gwen Trusts. Those were times when I really think I succeeded in getting through my concept of how the character thought and functioned.
My most popular story of this year:
I’ve got three answers to this. One would be the most popular story written in 2010, and that would definitely be my Yuletide main story, Telling Tales. Another possibility is my original story The Right Side of the Door, though that one was really me writing for one specific person, and other people liking it as well.
The last is to just say that the one that is still getting favorite and comments even though it’s a few years old is still the most popular one this year, and that’s Memory Keeper, my Lucy to Hermione HP/Narnia crossover. That’s pretty much my most liked story ever.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
It’s getting pulled in a lot, but Meditation, again. The people who liked it really seemed to like it, but it didn’t get a lot of attention or comments.
Most fun story to write:
Strangers Like Me, the Doctor Who/Merlin crossover. I grinned the entire time I wrote it.
Story with the single sexiest moment:
Erm. I don’t know, I’m bad at the sexy moments in general. Still haven’t crossed the smut barrier. Maybe my Bride and Prejudice one, First Times, or my Star Trek TNG Aspects, because what’s sexier than someone who knows who and what they are and is confident about it?
Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story:
Again, I’m not full of this. Probably Revenants, with the creepiness of what Ziva sees behind her.
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Five People Gwen Trusts. I hadn’t realized until I started to write that how much of an issue trust was going to be for Gwen, or how absolutely unsteady and untrustworthy her life is. Because, you see, most if not all of the people she trusted in that fic have or will betray her in some way. (Still have not seen third season of Merlin, btw.)
Hardest story to write:
My Nano! It’s long, it’s got a plot that I still haven’t got all the way figured out, and it’s all original characters, so I can’t just go back and reread the source text or watch the show/movie again to get the character voices down. And even though I’ve come up with a lot of backstory, and more pops into my head as I’m writing them, it’s still a struggle to make sure that they don’t all sound just like me.
Biggest Disappointment:
There’s a WiP I’m still thinking of finishing, featuring Merlin and a bunch of crossovers. It’s giving me a lot of grief. Also, my Dresden Files ficlet, Waiting. It mostly wrote itself, but there’s a lot I had to re-write when I fact checked it against the book, and I didn’t really like how I ended it, even if my recipient enjoyed it.
Biggest Surprise:
Succeeding in Nano! Alternately, The Right Side of the Door, as that one wrote itself more than most others do.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
The Right Side of the Door, probably. Or some of my Gwen-centric writings, as I see a lot of me in her, and put a lot of me into writing her then.
Fic-writing goals for 2011:
Finishing my WiPs! I’ve got the Nano, of course. I also have the amazing Merlin and Gwen centric crossover of doom to finish writing, and the last section of Facets that I really want to get finished.
I note that, with the exception of my WiPs, everything I wrote this year was female viewpoint characters, which is kind of awesome. So, continuing to write a majority of female characters being awesome, and I want to write more CoC. I’d love to do some St. Trinians fic, because that’s just an awesome movie full of interesting female characters to write about. I might go back to offering to write drabbles more often, just to keep my hand in.
And since I’ve asked for it twice in Yuletide and not gotten it, I’d really like to try writing my Lost World Marguerite fic. Because I want to see it, even if no one else is interested in writing it.
