Ah the fun of teaching religion in the Philippines.

The eighth grade is currently on the kings of Israel, and we've broken them down into groups to present about the three kings of the united Israel. My co-teacher is currently working on reading the Bible stories along with the class, as she admits she doesn't remember much of them from her own school days. My old math teacher, Mr. Green, will be relieved to know that even in the Philippines, the religion classes are often taught by whoever is free, regardless of their past experience or knowledge in the field.

This has lead to some amusing bits, including this week. As I mentioned, Ma'am Kana hasn't studied the Bible much. So she gets to the story of David, specifically the passages about David and Jonathon, and asks me, somewhat shocked, "Is he (Jonathon) a gay?"

My unspoken response: You're just noticing this now?

My spoken response was a bit more moderate, but yeah, David and Jonathon loved each other with a love surpassing that of women. This is presented very positively within the Bible sources, and is one of the major things I point to as a reason we can't say that the Bible condemns homosexuality.

But just the shock in her voice at the fact that David and Jonathon loved each other was far too amusing for me.
