Guardians of the Galaxy
Aug. 9th, 2014 11:45 pmSaw. Loved. Good Marvel movie in general. In specific, I had some critiques.
And now for the more spoilery thoughts.
At some point in the plotting, and if not in the initial plotting, then in the scriptwriting, there comes a point when the writers and producers should just accept that their designated lead does not have as interesting a storyline as the secondary character. And that the entire plotline and story really revolves around that secondary character.
Much though I enjoyed the film, this wasn't Starlord's story. This was Gamora's story. This was the story of Gamora finally escaping the man who'd tortured and enslaved her, it was the story of Gamora finding her conscience and working to save the galaxy on her own, before anyone else bothered to join her. It is the story of how she was trying to die to do the right thing, and how she emerged on the other side to try and figure out how to live beyond what she started out as, how to recreate a family without the pain and dysfunction of the previous one. It is her story about the loss of a sister and the gaining of friends, and how that affects the rest of her life.
And Zoe Saldana sells the hell out of it like no one else. Pratt is cute and engaging and fun, but he's not the emotional weight of the film, and it didn't work when they tried to do that. At most it only works to set up for the next film, and we don't need all of that in there just as set-up.
This was Gamora's story. I just wish Marvel had had the guts to admit it.
