HBP response
Aug. 12th, 2005 07:54 amOkay, so I know that everybody and their second cousin twice removed have made a Half Blood Prince response, and that ninety percent of them have a pet theory about Snape, but I was just rereading that scene and,
Snape is not evil. Okay, that was my first response anyway, but now I can back it up. In the book, Harry says that Snape bursts in and surveys the scene, seeing the four death eaters, Draco, and Dumbledore. Immediately after that, Dumbledore says, in a pleading tone of voice, "Severus". As of that moment, Snape has done nothing to arouse Dumbledore's suspicion. He's just come through the door. Not more than a minute before, Dumbledore was defending Snape to Draco. There is no new information that Dumbledore recieves, nothing to make him plead with Snape to let him live. And immediately before, Dumbledore had shown no fear for his life, even when confronted with four Death Eaters who would murder him. So. As of that moment, I can't believe Dumbledore was pleading for his life. What was he pleading for then? What would make him look Snape in the eye, and then repeat the plea? The only thing that makes sense in that context for me is for Dumbledore to be asking Snape to fulfill the terms of his vow. Dumbledore knows he is dieing, I can't see him trying to avoid it. I can see him making sure that Snape lives, that Draco is not killed for being unable to comit murder, and that Harry is not seen. Dumbledore is not afraid of death, but I do think he would want his death to be for the greater good. Am I right? We won't know until the seventh book, but this is the only theory that makes sense to me.
