HP fans make my head hurt

mari4212I love Harry Potter, but I swear, sometimes the majority of the fandom drives me nuts.
They cast Bellatrix, Luna, and Tonks. And immediately, twenty thousand fans started yelling "Helen McCrory is too old and ugly", "Evvana Lynch is too fat". Gah! I haven't seen McCrory act in anything, but the pictures of her in various roles show a woman in her mid thirties who isn't desperately trying to look 21 again. She looks beautiful, and very strong, and that's what I was looking for in Bellatrix. You know, it's okay to actually age gracefully, and not immediately go diving into botox. Besides, Bellatrix is supposed to be in her forties, and has spent years in Azkaban, not exactly a place that's great for your health.
And would someone remind the majority of fans that Luna is supposed to be an ordinary girl, and that Evvana is of normal weight? Just because we're shown models who are clinically underweight as beautiful doesn't mean that Luna should look like that! Didn't we just get through this mess with the poor girl who played Cho?

Date: 2006-02-02 04:06 pm (UTC)I'm not bothered really on who plays Luna, but I was very glad that Bellatrix doesn't look too different to how I expected. She's been in Azkaban for a long time and wasn't meant to be particularly young or beautiful to begin with so I don't know why these fans seem to have been expecting a young, pretty actress.

Also, when I saw her picture, all I could think was that they got Bellatrix exactly right. She looks like Bellatrix (and the actress playing Tonks? Looks like Tonks. She has Tonks' smile.)

Date: 2006-02-02 05:22 pm (UTC)For one thing, modeling does not equate acting. Yes, there are many actress/models out there and some are actually pretty good at the acting bit. Cameron Diaz comes to mind. I've liked every movie I've seen her in. However, being a model does not automatically mean a person can act.
Too fat, too old...I'd rather have that than people who are "pretty" (which is a subjective term anyway) who can't act, whose performances leave me with nothing more than "Oh look, they made this into a movie. What's the storyline again? You mean I wasn't supposed to notice there was a storyline because there were ZOMGSPECIALEFFECTS!!!! and pretty people to look at?" You know, because having a "beautiful actor or actress" in a movie automatically makes it oscar worthy.

And I agree. I'd prefer those who aren't as pretty by society's definition but who can act well over the pretty people who are just that.

I am a low-maintenance friend, hardly ever write and when I do it's only what shreds of sanity my children have left me with at the end of the day - so I won't clog the f-list and there's absolutely no need to actually read it!
Plus - I adore John Donne (Batter My Heart).
McCrory is an amazing actress who will surprise (and scare) everybody.
