Good and bad news tonight.

The bad news is that sci-fi channel decided to show lots of monster movies tonight, so there's no Doctor Who.

The good news, is that my parents and I ended up talking with one of our neighbors from down the block for about an hour. It's always nice to meet interesting, intelligent people, and we had a lovely conversation. I ended up promising that I'd come over sometime soon to teach her how to bake some bread, and I've lent her a book from one of my favorite authors. She was apparently very impressed by how well-read I was, and how much information my father and I have pack-ratted into our brains. So it seems to be the start of a good relationship with another neighbor.

I don't know why people say they never talk to their neighbors anymore, it's so much fun, and there's such a sense of community on parts of our block. And it only takes five minutes now and then, to stop and say hi and catch up on the latest news in their lives.

I don't get it either (even though I kind of suck at it). My nextdoor neighbours (at home) are wonderful people, intelligent, amusing, and just all-round nice.

I know. So many of the people around me are nice and interesting. It's worth the effort it takes to keep up with them.

*nod* Exactly. When I was younger, we were always talking with the neighbours - I'd play with the kids in the street. But now, since around 1999/2000 (the new millenium!) it seems like it's happening less.
