LJ Interests meme results

  1. biology:
The study of life. It forms part of my major, and it's been one of my major interests ever since my freshman year of high school, where I had a teacher who captured my interest and made me fall in love with the subject. Don't get me going on how awesome this subject is, or how cool various facets of evolution are, or I'll never shut up.
  2. cs lewis:
One of my favorite authors, and definitely my favorite Christian apologist. He's intelligent, insightful, and while I may argue with him on certain particulars, he's shaped a lot of my theology. Plus, he had a fantastic sense of humor and knew how to snark with the best of them. And he wrote The Chronicles of Narnia. This cannot possibly be bad.
  3. fairy tales:
I love them. I loved them as a child, and I love them now as I re-read them and read new stories based on them. They always capture my sense of fantasy.
  4. harry potter:
Like aproximately 85% of the population, I enjoy the books and the world JKR has created.
  5. luna lovegood:
Ah, Loony Lovegood. I love her independence and her creative insanity. I also love how she can be contented in herself, and is happy to be what she is, with or without other people's approval. She's me, only I'm a little more grounded and pragmatic. There are probably several people who think I'm just as insane as she is.
  6. mythology:
This goes right along with the fairy tales, I think. Mythology can tell us great truth, if it's not necessarily factual. And there is something wonderful and awe-inspiring about the myths of various cultures.
  7. proper spelling:
I don't believe in cutsy spelling mistakes or chatspeak. They give me headaches. As does frequent spelling errors on anything "published", even if it's only published on a fan archive. On the other hand, I know I don't remember to doublecheck my own spelling errors often enough when it's just on my journal.
  8. science:
What can I say, I'm a geek. I'm curious about how the world works, and science gives answers about that. That being said, I have a decided preference for the life sciences, mainly because I don't have the math skills to understand physics in-depth.
  9. stargate sg-1:
It's fun, it's got interesting characters and character dynamics, and it's not afraid to make fun of itself. I like this show a lot. And any show which has snarky naked aliens in it has to be pretty cool. Plus, this show spawned Stargate Atlantis, which regularly has me squeeing at a pitch to destroy bat eardrums.
  10. wesley/fred:
Probably my favorite pairing from Angel. This is quite possibly because those two characters were my favorites. I was very upset when Angel pulled a Babylon 5 on me and killed off my favorite character and left my second favorite character to live the rest of their life somewhat miserable.

I enjoy intentional misspellings at time ("teh" and "evar" come immediately to mind) but am forever editing my own LJ entries and have to restrain myself from leaving comments on other people's entries correcting their typos (because while I am immensely grateful when people point out my own to me I know I'm unusual in that).

I should really read more of Lewis' apologetics at some point, but I rather doubt I will ever be a fan as I wasn't sold on his foundational logic in Mere Christianity and he was heavily influenced by Chesterton who makes me violent.

There's a few intentional misspellings, like the ones you mention, that I don't mind because they just read as part of the internet dialect, but normally they just rub me the wrong way.

And if you spot some typos or other misspellings on my posts, don't hesitate to correct me. I'd rather have it correct, and I know I often miss things because I'm posting in a hurry or my eye skims over something.

You might enjoy his work, Reflections on the Psalms, more. I never really notice some of Lewis's larger leaps in logic, maybe because I'm used to making the same leaps myself.

I'm a big fan of LJ's spellchecker, though I often forget to use it when I'm commenting (and obviously it doesn't catch grammar mistakes).

[You spelled "interests" as "intrests" in your Subject and the last line of your post.]

Reflections on the Psalms wasn't on my list (I've never heard of it) but I'll keep it in mind.

Thanks, I can't believe I missed those.

Reflections isn't really one of his apologetic works, but it is interesting in and of itself, as a thinking man's working through the psalms, including the non-pretty bits about smashing infants' heads against the rocks.

Yeah, I basically mean nonfiction by Lewis. I mean, Mere Christianity is explicit apologetics, but I've had The Problem of Pain and Till We Have Faces recommended to me. And I'm not sure quite how one would classify the Space Trilogy -- which is fiction but is much like Narnia in that it's fiction written with an agenda.

You'll either really enjoy or really dislike Till We Have Faces, it's just one of those books that people are rarely tepid about.

I think the easiest way to deal with the Space Trilogy and Narnia is to do what Lewis said and read them as their own stories first, but to be aware that the Christian subtext is real and intentional. So they're fiction first, allegory/parable secondarily.

Oh, and I'm definitely intrigued by Reflections. I have a sick love for the difficult parts of the Bible because I love problematizing things and making people uncomfortable (in the moving out of your comfort zone sense, not being mean to people).

Then you'll definitely like Reflections, at least for the spirit in which it was written. He starts out with the nasty bits, following, as he says, the school-boy logic to eat the nasty-tasting things on a plate first and then move on to the good stuff.

I agree, it's good to address the issues you has with your beliefs, rather than pushing them aside and pretending they don't exist.

Doo, a high-tech version!

I like Biology (some of it) a lot. It makes me happy you do too (as though it was uncommon knowledge that you do).

Poor bats. Probably why they fled the tree out the back of my house too. Ignoring the fact that it wascut down.

Ah yes, the poor bats.

I like biology as well, and if the major on campus wasn't so geared towards medical school and included organic chemistry, I would totally be a biosci major.

From: [identity profile] mari4212.livejournal.com
It's a fun subject, although I thought by now that almost every biology program demanded at least a basic course in organic chem, just so that you could understand cellular functions.

Hmm, I didn't know. I just know that a very high majority of the bio majors on campus are looking at med school. I haven't actually met a bio major who wasn't planning on med school, since all the courses required for the general bio major are med school reqs.

It's a very popular track to go with a bachelors in bio. About the only other option which really uses all of the bio major is research, and most researchers require a higher degree level.

I'm actually PT track, which is still in the related medical field.

Why is Lewis called an apologist? I've never quite understood that.

I love Luna too! She's got to be one of the best characters evar! I mean ever ;)

Apologist is a term given to someone who argues for something. This is also the reason why Socrates' famous dialogue is called The Apology, as it is an argument for his reasoning style and beliefs. C.S. Lewis was well know for his defense of Christianity and Christian thought.
