I've been re-reading To Kill A Mockingbird for the past few days. And, in the process, remembering exactly why it is that Atticus Finch is one of my all-time literary heroes. Because yes. He's a good man who does what is honorable above what is easy, and accepts the consequences. And he doesn't make a fuss over it, he just does it, because it's right, because he couldn't be who he was and not do it.

...Yeah. Reading over that, I think that last sentence pretty much describes all of my favorite characters of all time.

So, what about you guys? Any random literary heroes?

Dicey Tillerman, in Cynthia Voigt's Maryland cycle. So much love.

Also, not sure if this counts as "literary" because it's a true story, but The Three Doctors are amazing. I recently ended up with a copy of We Beat the Streets and...I don't have the words for how amazing they are. Classic Hufflepuff success story, too - they knew that none of them would make it without the other two, and so even now when they give speeches and such they always do it together.

I've been more movie-ish than bookish lately, but been going through a lot of Incredibles-love lately, for similar reasons - their strength is their connectedness, especially Violet and Dash.

Dude. Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings. Because he's honorable and faithful, fights for what is right, and is loyal to the bitter end EVEN when Frodo is a jerk to him and tells him to leave. Seriously, when you look up "loyal", in the dictionary, there is a picture of Sam. :)

I love Anne Shirley....just 'cause. I reckon she reminds me of me, except she *really* *did* have it tough as a young child. And then....she just blossomed into this wonderful, wonderful creature.

Yeah. And I don't even have an AoGG icon. Huh.

Also? Alabama writers FTW!!!!

Henry Tilney from Northanger Abbey! He's kind, attentive, snarky, and willing to laugh at society's excesses, and he loves a good novel (even when fashionable men didn't). He's far less invested in maintaining a facade of macho masculinity than, say, John Thorpe is: he can talk muslins with Mrs. Allen and Udolpho with Catherine, PLUS he has all the macho things that Thorpe cares so much about (a curricle, fine horses and dogs) but masters them with matter-of-fact competence and without all Thorpe's empty boasting. Plus he gets Catherine through her most cringingly humiliating moments, forgives her, loves her, and always treats her generously, even when she believes horrible things of his family. I think all of that is pretty heroic.
