Jun. 21st, 2013 09:36 pmI spent today surrounding myself with words of deep wisdom. And also with a beautiful monastery on the edge of the Hudson river.
Today was something of a rest day in the midst of our YASC training. For the past few days, it's been an almost non-stop information deluge, useful information, but coming almost too fast to process. We ended every day's session exhausted mentally. Admittedly, it has so far been good and useful information, primarily cross-cultural sensitivity training. It helps that our trainer has lived what he is teaching, as he grew up in Sri Lanka and learned our culture secondarily, after he moved to Canada.
Today, we went to Holy Cross Monastary. If, like me, you have never been there, you should. The brothers are wonderful, vibrantly alive, they live out the Benedictine tradition of hospitality with graciousness, and it was a wonderful experience.
One of the brothers, though I'm not sure he was present, or at least I wasn't introduced to him, was a calligrapher. Throughout the monastery there were calligraphic prints he had done of words of wisdom and insight. My favorites:
May God give you the grace never to sell yourself short, grace to risk something big for something good, grace to remember that the world is now too dangerous for anything but truth, and too small for anything but love. ~W.S. Coffin
Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who journey the way with us. So be swift to love and make haste to be kind. ~Henri Amiel
Love must act as light must shine, as fire must burn. ~Huntington
